10 small J'can BPO firms to benefit from US$480,000 growth project

About 10 small operators in the flourishing business process outsourcing (BPO) industry are to be selected for a US$480,000 project aimed at enabling them to move up the value chain.

The Jamaica GSS Project will assist these firms to digitise their operations and embrace growing trends in the sector.

The project will also assist with the development of a general GSS strategic road map to help members refine and improve their growth strategy and carry out an industry forecast to identify and move into niche markets.

Additionally, it will optimise processes within the Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica (BPIAJ) to meet members’ needs for scaling up. This will be done by increasing the institutional capacity of the association to better serve its growing membership, improve advocacy capabilities, and develop more effective rules and procedures.

BPIAJ president, Gloria Henry, explained that 10 companies will be selected for the project and they will receive critical support over an 18-month period.

A consultant will be engaged to develop the criteria to identify the firms. Henry said the consultant should be on board by October “so we expect to end the year with the project already started”.

She noted that the project is a continuation of critical support to Jamaica under the Compete Caribbean programme, and follows the establishment of the 200-seat incubator facility in Montego Bay in 2015.

 “Since then, we have accommodated eight firms and we have created employment opportunities for over 2,000 employees directly and that has continued on a sustainable model,” Henry said.

“We have since re-equipped the facility, put in new furniture, redesigned it, increase it by 10 per cent and we continue to evolve with that model to the extent that we are expanding the model into Kingston,” she added. 

Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Pearnel Charles Jr., said the Jamaica Global Services Sector (GSS) – Moving Firms up the Value Chain Project is a critical investment that will grow the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector and create more high level jobs for young people.

He was speaking at the launch of the project on Wednesday at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) headquarters in Kingston. 

Charles Jr. noted that the initiative, which is a partnership between the Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility (CCPF) and the Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica (BPIAJ), is in keeping with the government’s commitment to support expansion of the BPO sector by assisting small, local firms.

“We reaffirm our commitment. We acknowledge all of the work that has been done by the stakeholders in the sector,” he added.

CCPF - a co-financing facility established by the IDB, United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), Government of Canada and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) - is providing US$400,000 for the undertaking with US$80,000 from the BPIAJ.

The Complete Caribbean programme funded over 100 private sector projects across the region over the period 2010-2016.

The projects generated nearly 12,000 jobs; a 23 per cent increase in exports (US$153 million), as well as improvement in the business climate for some countries through policy or regulatory reforms.
