UTech grades released following talks
Students at the University of Technology (UTech) Jamaica can now access their grades and other services following “reasonable discussions” between unions and government officials.
On Tuesday, the University of Technology Academic Staff Union (UTASU) said it had reluctantly decided to withhold grades for Semester One 2023/2024 in response to the Government's failure to provide a compensation review proposal.
A release from the university on Friday evening said discussions were held among union heads, representatives from the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, the Ministry of Education and Youth, members of the Public Sector Transformation and Implementation Unit and executives from UTech.
It said the Government's proposed salary bands were shared with the union heads.
It said as a result of those talks "students can now access their grades and all other services that may have been suspended or delayed by academic staff earlier this week."
"The University Administration apologises to stakeholders for any inconvenience caused by staff actions this week. The Administration also expresses gratitude to the various parties for their efforts to facilitate a settled environment and advancement in the wellbeing of the community," the release said.
UTech said UTASU and the University and Allied Workers Union have been agitating for the implementation of the Governments' compensation review while the University of Technology Administrative Staff Union (UTASA) has been advocating for a parity exercise before implementing the compensation review.
It said discussions and exercises are underway for the parity exercise on behalf of UTASA.
