Healthcare at Mandeville Regional Hospital in Manchester has been boosted by the donation of an eye laser machine and 23 patient stretchers, valued at J$23 million.

The items were donated on October 16 by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the Rotary Club of Mandeville.

Hospital CEO Alwyn Miller said the donation is "extremely significant" and "will have a major impact on our services".

"Our eye machine recently went down and could not be repaired, so we are indeed grateful,” he said, noting that the ophthalmology unit handles over 200 surgeries annually.

Dr Alvin Henry, senior registrar and acting head of the Accident and Emergency Department, added that the stretchers will greatly aid in managing overcrowding.

“Occasionally, we face the challenge of no available stretchers for patients, so this contribution comes at an opportune time. Since they arrived, they have already been in use,” he explained.
