Detectives attached to the Morant Bay Criminal Investigation Branch have charged a St Thomas woman for allegedly defrauding over $1.2 million from persons in a Canadian work permit scam.

Rakim Rasheena Ramsay, 31, a secretary from Cottage Lane in Yallahs, has been charged with fraudulent conversion, obtaining money by false pretence, and conspiracy to defraud.

The alleged fraudulent activities occurred between Saturday, November 11, and Thursday, December 12, 2024.

It is alleged that Ramsay, while posing as a travel consultant, solicited money from three complainants, promising to secure Canadian work permits.

Ramsay reportedly collected $409,500 from each complainant, amounting to a total of $1,228,500.

According to the police, Ramsay used the funds for her own benefit and was unable to return the sums.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police on Saturday, January 11, 2025.

Ramsay was later arrested and charged based on the complainants’ statements and a question-and-answer session.
