Jessica Davidson, president of the Rotary Club of Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland, says the seven individuals who were chosen as this year’s honourees by the club exemplify the Rotary motto of, ‘Service Above Self’, which they demonstrated through their community and vocational contributions.

Davidson made the observation during her opening remarks at the club’s recent annual Community and Vocational Service Awards Banquet at Hotel Commingle, also in Westmoreland.

“This evening is not just about awards; it is a recognition of the dedication, hard work, and tireless commitment of those who have made significant impacts in their communities and professions,” said Davidson. “Whether through their community service, leadership, or professional excellence, each awardee represents the very best of what it means to serve humanity with compassion, innovation, and purpose.”

Davidson noted that as Rotarians, they are motivated by “a mission to create lasting change, and shared great delight in celebrating those who walk this path with us, whether as professionals, community advocates, or change-makers”.

“To our awardees, we pause to applaud your achievements and the example you have set for us all. Your stories remind us that service is the cornerstone of progress, and that the impact of one individual’s work can ripple outwards to benefit many,” she said.

Leading the list of awardee was renowned football administrator and coach Wendell Downswell, whose lifelong commitment to football and his unwavering dedication to the development of sports in Jamaica has also earned him a national award.

The other awardees were David Woodbine, for his life of service to the community and excelling as a specialist mathematics teacher and transportation entrepreneur; Gemrose Thomas-Meyler, for her enduring impact on the community as an entrepreneur, educator, and mentor; Ikula J. Pearce, for his outstanding contributions to education, youth empowerment, and community development; Hilda Hibbert, for being an extraordinary educator, leader, and community advocate; Millicent Victoria Nunes, for her unwavering commitment to the agricultural sector and her community; and Elaine Lovessa Dobson, a retired principal and educator, who received an award for her commitment to shaping young minds and fostering academic success.

Government Senator Charles Sinclair, who delivered the main address at the awards banquet, praised the awardees for their unwavering commitment to serving their communities.

“There are many who come from humble beginnings, born in a manger, or in that one-bedroom board house, but through ambition, tenacity, and hard work, overcome the challenges of life and improve their personal circumstances,” said Sinclair.

Sinclair expressed confidence that, as individuals improve their personal and professional lives, they in some way positively impact their community, at times even without knowing it.
