Little London High, Japan’s Iwami High sign sister school partnership
WESTERN BUREAU:
Danree Delancy, mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, has announced that the parish’s Little London High School has signed a sister school relationship with Iwami High School, which is located in the city of Tottori Prefecture in Japan.
According to Delancy, the initiative, which was signed last Wednesday, marks the 10th anniversary of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in 2015 for the twinning of the Japanese city of Tottori Prefecture with the parish of Westmoreland. Last year, Jamaica and Japan marked 60 years of diplomatic relations.
“We are having a visit from a Japanese delegation and, as you all know, we have a twinning arrangement with Tottori. They will be paying a courtesy call here at the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation, after which they will be travelling to Little London High School where they will be signing a sister school agreement between that institution and Iwami High School in Japan,” said Delancy.
“We look forward to welcoming our friends from Tottori as part of strengthening our relationship,” he told last week’s sitting of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation.
“Westmoreland and Tottori will be discussing greater cooperation in diversifying agricultural management, culture and sports, and education.”
Westmoreland has a population of approximately 145,000, while the city of Tottori Prefecture has a population of 573,000 with an annual budget of 330 million yen. Its main agricultural productions are cattle, fruits, and rice.
Little London High School is this year celebrating its 55th anniversary as a government-owned co-educational institution.
The institution, which started as Little London Junior Secondary, catering to students from grades seven to nine, opened its doors in 1970 and later upgraded to a new secondary in 1974, at which time the grades 10 and 11 programmes were introduced.
In 1998, the school was further upgraded to a comprehensive high school.
