‘Father-Son Link-Up’
Fathers urged to play active role in sons’ lives at Bethel Primary event
WESTERN BUREAU:
Jasmin Beckford-Johnson, principal of Bethel Primary School in Hopewell, Hanover, is urging fathers to take an active role in their sons’ lives, emphasising their vital role in shaping their children’s overall development.
Beckford-Johnson, who has been leading the institution since May 2019, made the call while addressing the school’s annual special day ceremony, themed Father-Son Link-up 2025, last week.
“Let me tell you something – I don’t know about my teachers, but they know this about me – when I see fathers, I get excited. When I see them walking their kids to school in the mornings, especially their sons, I get overly excited,” she shared passionately.
Beckford-Johnson, whose extensive teaching career includes experience in the United States and leadership roles at three different schools in Jamaica, expressed pride in the number of fathers actively involved in their children’s education.
“All of you men here today – do you know what you’re saying to your sons? You’re telling them, ‘I support you, I love you, and I have your back,’” she noted.
“When a boy knows that his father is there for him, it builds his confidence, bravery, and strength. He grows up knowing that no matter what happens, he has a man who will walk with him and hold his hand – his daddy.”
‘HUG YOUR BOYS’
Encouraging fathers to embrace their children emotionally, she urged them not to shy away from showing affection.
“Fathers, don’t be afraid to hug your children and tell them you love them. Kids who experience love, guidance, and affection from a father figure tend to perform better in many aspects of life,” she said.
While not citing specific statistics, Beckford-Johnson shared that in her experience, many young men who stray from the right path often lack the love and support of a father figure at home.
“Make sure you are a part of your children’s lives,” she urged. “See them regularly, talk to them daily, hug your boys, and remind them that you love them – because that kind of communication is crucial.”
The event, themed ‘Building Unbreakable Bonds: Strengthening Relationships’, featured interactive games between fathers and sons, sparking enthusiasm and excitement.
Bethel Primary School, known as The Home of Champions, is one of Hanover’s most sought-after institutions. Serving five adjoining districts, the school boasts a student population of over 600 and a rich history of academic excellence.
