Jamaicans have until July 1 to use old banknotes – BOJ

Published:Saturday | April 5, 2025 | 5:36 PM

Jamaicans are being advised by the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) that the old banknotes will no longer be legal tender effective Tuesday, July 1.

This means that the old cotton $5,000, $1,000, $500, $100 and $50 banknotes cannot be used for transactions for goods and services after that date.

Jamaicans are being given the next three months to use the old notes.

Notwithstanding, members of the public can always visit the BOJ to exchange the old notes for the new polymer banknotes.

As of July 1, only the polymer banknotes, which have been in circulation since June 2023, can be used for cash transactions.

The change in the usage of banknotes does not affect coins.
