Sex crimes dominate Easter Term trial list for St Catherine Circuit Court

Sexual offences continue to dominate the docket at the St Catherine Circuit Court, with 109 cases, nearly a third of those set for trial this term, alleging sexual violations.

Some 45 of those listed matters involve sexual activity with a person under 16 years old.

The trend was described as "regrettable" by the Crown at Monday's opening of the Eastern Term. A total of 361 cases are listed for trial, with 336 being newly filed matters.

Other significant cases include possession of identity information, arson, wounding with intent, vehicular manslaughter.

Justice Dale Palmer, who is presiding over the term, highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Crown and the private bar to ensure the timely delivery of justice.

"It is not possible to conclude over 300 matters by trial during the circuit; therefore, cooperation is needed where persons can plead, and the Crown can also assist when the matter cannot proceed to trial," Justice Palmer said.

He also commended jurors for their civic duty and highlighted their importance to the judicial process.

On behalf of the Private Bar, Attorney-at-Law Kemoy McEkron expressed full cooperation with the Crown.

"We (the Private Bar) will cooperate with the Crown for the timely delivery of justice to our clients. We know that there are times when matters can be resolved, and we are a part of the drive for justice," McEkron said.

There was consensus that this year’s juror turnout is the highest in recent times, and the police were commended for their efforts.

The term was formally opened with a march by members of the police force.

Superintendent Leighton Grey represented St Catherine South, while Deputy Superintendent of Police Camendo Thoms represented St Catherine North.

Dr Camille Hudson represented the Custos of St Catherine.
