Tufton condemns assault of nurse by driver
Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton, has strongly condemned the physical assault of a nurse by a male driver on Tuesday night during a traffic incident.
“I am shocked and outraged at the brutality of the assault. It is a heinous act, perpetrated against a member of the healthcare team – a team whose members consistently go above and beyond the call of duty in service to the people of Jamaica,” Tufton said in a statement Friday.
The encounter was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media.
“This assault, whether on our healthcare workers or Jamaicans, must not be tolerated,” said Tufton.
The health minister is calling for the police to move swiftly to investigate this matter and to ensure that the full extent of the law is applied.
“I implore the public to be respectful and protective of our healthcare workers, as they move about their business in the society,” said Tufton.
The St Andrew businessman remains in police custody and is expected to be charged soon.
Tufton disclosed that the nurse has been treated at the University Hospital of the West Indies and released.
He said the Ministry will continue to offer support to her and her family as appropriate.
