A policeman was shot and killed Saturday morning at his home in Old Harbour, St Catherine.

The victim has been identified as Corporal Kamal Mayne.

He was assigned to the Kingston Western police division and had been serving in the Jamaica Constabulary Force for about 20 years.

Corporal Mayne's body was found about 5:30 a.m.

Reports are that as he arrived at home he was pounced upon and shot after exiting his vehicle. His firearm was reportedly stolen.

"This is a stark reminder of the realities that the police have to face on a day-to-day basis," Deputy Commissioner of Police Richard Stewart said in commenting on the incident.

He said the investigation was in the early stages and the police are "still working on a theory". He appealed to members of the public to provide any information that can help to bring the investigation to a speedy conclusion.

Stewart said the police would spare no resources in carrying out their investigation.
