16 pistols and over 250 rounds of ammunition seized at Kingston warehouse
The police are reporting the seizure of 16 firearms and over 250 rounds of ammunition at a warehouse on Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston last week Wednesday.
They say a joint operation between the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) and the Firearm and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) yielded the cache.
The police say this latest seizure is another blow to organised crime as the authorities intensify their crackdown on illegal firearms and narcotics.
Reports are that about 10:30 a.m. the JCA was conducting a security screening when anomalies were detected with a shipment.
The FNID was alerted and during checks, the weapons were unearthed.
The items of evidential value included 16 pistols and 259 rounds of ammunition.
There were also 25 magazines.
Director of FNID, Acting Senior Superintendent of Police Patrae Rowe, said this seizure is another reminder of the continued work being done to secure the Jamaican borders against illegal items.
"Every illegal firearm removed from circulation represents lives that are saved and puts us a step closer towards a safer Jamaica," said Rowe.
"We will continue to pursue individuals involved in the trafficking of firearms and narcotics to further enhance the safety and security of citizens," he added.
Meanwhile, the police are urging anyone with information that can assist with the investigation to contact them.
In recent months the Jamaica Constabulary Force and Jamaica Customs Agency have seized 148 illegal firearms and approximately 8,000 assorted rounds shipped from the United States to legitimate ports of entry.
During this period, there have been at least three major gun busts at wharves in Kingston.
In recent weeks there have been other gun busts at warehouses in Kingston.
In one occasion a woman and her two sons were detained in Manchester.
