Jamaicans wait to be reunited with relatives deported from the US
Several family members are currently at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston awaiting their loved ones who are part of the largest group of deportees from the United States (US) since the start of the year.
The Gleaner understands that 107 arrived on a chartered flight this morning.
Approximately 330 Jamaicans have been sent home from the US so far this year.
Deportation proceedings from the US are usually undertaken on the last Thursday of each month.
A senior police personnel at the airport disclosed to the gathering of relatives and friends that the process would be longer today because of the large number of returned Jamaicans.
Meanwhile, amid concerns surrounding public safety in relation to the deportation of persons to Jamaica with criminal backgrounds, the Cabinet has approved a coordinated Deportation Response Action Plan and established a Multi-Agency Working Group, the Ministry of National Security has disclosed.
The Technical Working Group established by the Office of the Cabinet comprises representatives from key ministries, including law enforcement, social support agencies and civil society, and is tasked with delivering a streamlined response plan.
This includes reception protocols, reintegration support, security vetting where appropriate, and community liaison services.
