Man who escaped from Barnett Street police lock-up charged
A 43-year-old man who escaped from the Barnett Street Police lock-up in St James last December has been charged after being recaptured in St Ann.
Maurice Belnavis, of Greens, Paradise Norwood, St James, was apprehended by police in Ocho Rios, St Ann, around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, after he was spotted in a section of the community.
He was subsequently transferred to St James, where he was formally charged with escaping custody on Saturday, May 31, following the execution of a warrant.
His court date is currently being finalised.
Belnavis was one of five men who escaped from the Barnett Street Police lock-up on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
Since the escape, three of the fugitives were fatally shot during armed confrontations with police in St James and Trelawny between December 2024 and April 2025.
The fourth escapee was recaptured in Spot Valley, St James, a day after the breakout.
