A man was killed by the police and another arrested following an alleged shootout in Jacks River, Oracabessa, St Mary, on Monday.

It is understood that a police team was conducting patrols in the Oracabessa area of St Mary, along the Jack’s River main road, when officers signalled a the rider of a motorcycle, which had a pillion onboard, to stop.

The rider of the motorcycle reportedly complied, however, during the police's approach, one of the men allegedly brandished a firearm and pointed it toward the officers.

"In response, the police took evasive action and discharged their service weapons," said Superintendent Anthony Wallace, the head of the St Mary Police Division.

"One of the men was found on the ground with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He was transported to the Port Maria hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered from the scene," Wallace added.

The other occupant of the motorcycle was taken into custody.
