Taxi driver, passenger shot dead in St Ann
A taxi driver and a male passenger were shot dead in Mammee Bay, St Ann, on Wednesday afternoon by two gunmen who had posed as passengers, police have confirmed.
“We have two men, deceased, that’s the driver for the taxi and a passenger. They have been identified but I cannot disclose the names as yet as I’m not sure if all the family members have been informed,” Acting Senior Superintendent Rohan Elliott told The Gleaner shortly after 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Reports are that the grey Toyota Probox taxi, which operates along the Ocho Rios to St Ann’s Bay route, departed Ocho Rios with three men as passengers.
About 1:20 p.m., as the vehicle approached the Greenwich Acres area, the two men in the back seat asked to exit. After getting out, they reportedly pulled firearms and opened fire on the driver and the front-seat passenger.
The gunmen reportedly escaped in a waiting motor car.
The injured men were transported to the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The shooting caused a traffic buildup along the North Coast Highway as police conducted investigations.
