The Port Authority of Jamaica is reporting that the removal of benches and planter pots from Water Square in Falmouth, Trelawny, was done to facilitate refurbishment, as they were in a serious state of disrepair.

Some residents had raised questions about the removal.

Responding, Vice President of Cruise Ports Management at the authority, Mark Hylton, told The Gleaner that an email was sent to the Falmouth mayor on Friday, August 8, advising of the planned removal.

Hylton dismissed claims in the public domain of any ulterior motive on the part of the authority, noting that the removal was strictly for repairs.

He said the items were removed on Sunday, August 10, and taken to the terminal's maintenance facility.

The plan, he added, is to have the benches and planter pots refurbished and returned ahead of the peak cruise season in October.
