Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Desmond McKenzie, is urging the municipal authorities and mayors across Jamaica to be vigilant and ensure all election paraphernalia are removed "within reasonable time".

"It is important that all members of both political parties cooperate in removing the political banners and flags and various things that was used in promoting the political parties during the election campaign. The elections are over, it is important that the country returns to normality and one of the ways that we can contribute to the return is to ensure that Jamaica continues to look pretty, to look good," McKenzie said on Tuesday.

He has also urged the support of all Jamaicans in the endeavour.

The law requires the removal of all campaign paraphernalia within 14 days after the conclusion of an election.

Montego Bay Mayor Richard Vernon has already given candidates and political parties until September 17 to remove their campaign advertisements.

Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby has proposed the introduction of a refundable bond system to ensure the timely removal of campaign signs across the municipality.
