Cornwall College unveils memorabilia store
WESTERN BUREAU:
Cornwall College, one of western Jamaica’s oldest high schools, has unveiled a memorabilia store that blends tradition with teaching, in what the school’s chairman, Dr Richard Meggo, has described as “a critical step in nation-building” through curriculum enrichment.
According to Meggo, the venture is more than a cultural gesture, as it is designed to foster student engagement, entrepreneurship, and civic pride.
“This venture will also support curriculum development and allow our business students to gain firsthand experience in operating a business, as we will incorporate them into the store’s operations,” said Meggo, who sees tremendous potential in the store, which had its official opening on Monday at the school’s Orange Street campus.
According to Meggo, the store will serve as a practical resource for students pursuing business education, as they will be allowed to use its operations as part of their school-based assessments (SBAs).
“While students are engaging with the theoretical aspects of their studies, they’ll also gain practical exposure to what those concepts look like in action. They can use it for their SBAs and for a range of other applications,” he said.
Meggo hailed the launch of the store as a milestone achievement, reflecting the school’s long-standing commitment to excellence.
“This is a moment we can all celebrate. It has something for everyone who wants to carry a piece of Cornwall College with them. It also caters to those who walked these hallowed halls years ago. They can now return and pick up a shirt from their school house,” he said.
Michael Ellis, the principal at the 129-year-old all-boys institution, described the launch as long-awaited and highly significant in the bid to build on the school’s legacy.
“We’ve been discussing the idea of archiving our memorabilia for some time,” said Ellis, who noted that the current students are quite enthusiastic about the branded items. “The old boys have often asked why we hadn’t established something like this before.
“The student population is very interested in the memorabilia, to the point where they’re asking if they can wear their Cornwall College armbands with their uniforms. We’ve given them a bit of flexibility in that regard, provided the items are purchased from the store.”
The store offers a wide range of items, including shirts, mugs, armbands, homework books, pens, pins, football jerseys, and shoes. Ellis added that the merchandise may also be used as part of the incentive package to high-performing students.
