Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby.

The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) says claims that persons are being charged for admission into emergency shelters in preparation for Hurricane Melissa are false.

The KSAMC says all emergency shelters are free of cost and open to all members of the public who may be affected by the impending weather system.

Mayor of Kingston, Andrew Swaby, has strongly condemned the misinformation, describing it as “reckless and irresponsible, especially at a time when accurate information can make the difference between safety and harm.”

“The KSAMC, in collaboration with shelter partners and other national agencies, remains focused on safeguarding lives, particularly among the homeless and those in flood-prone communities. We urge the public to rely solely on official channels for information and updates,” said Swaby.

The KSAMC says it continues to coordinate the evacuation of vulnerable individuals across at-risk areas, while ensuring that shelters are adequately staffed and equipped.
