Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says the damage to the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, is not as extensive as appears on videos that have been shared widely.

He says the videos show a section of the concourse which houses gates 1-5 and that, "while alarming, give only a snapshot of one section of a very large airport".

In an update on X, Vaz said because of proximity gates 6 and 7 will also be closed out.

However, he says gates 8-19 are on a separate concourse which sustained minimal damage and has less repairs needed for function.

Sangster International will open at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow for relief flights.

He says assessments are ongoing, and a decision is to be made no later today on the resumption of commercial flights.
