Distinguished scholar Dr Christopher Charles has died, PNP says Jamaica has lost a brilliant mind
The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) joins the academic community and the wider Jamaica in mourning the passing of Professor Dr Christopher A. D. Charles, saying Jamaica has lost a brilliant mind and a courageous voice.
The PNP has described Professor Charles as a distinguished scholar who dedicated his life to advancing the understanding of Jamaican politics, identity, and social issues.
Professor Charles served with distinction at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, in the Department of Government, where he was a Professor of Political and Social Psychology.
He was also a lecturer at Monroe College and City University of New York where he lectured Criminal Justice and African American Studies, respectively.
Professor Charles was known for his intellectual rigour, courage, and commitment to truth.
The PNP says his analyses of political behaviour, race, and social identity challenged the status quo and contributed meaningfully to the national conversation on democracy, governance, and justice.
“His pioneering research and fearless public commentary illuminated the intersections of psychology, governance, and culture. Through his teaching, mentorship, and prolific scholarship, he inspired generations of students and scholars to think critically about the society we live in and to work toward building a more just and equitable Jamaica.”
The party has extended heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and all who were touched by his life and work.
“.. his legacy will continue to guide and inspire. May his soul rest in peace and his work continue to light the path toward understanding and progress.”
