The Wheeler’s Mount Basic School in St Catherine, which was damaged by Hurricane Melissa.

The fury of Hurricane Melissa has left the Wheeler’s Mount Basic School in Guys Hill, St Catherine, in ruins after powerful winds ripped the roof off the small institution.

The school, which serves 14 students and has two staff members, suffered extensive damage to furniture, reading material, and students’ workbooks.

Principal ZTavish Crossman said the devastation has left both staff and students displaced.

“Coming to the school after the hurricane, I was heartbroken to see the level of destruction. I began to question where the money would come from to carry out the repairs,” Crossman told The Gleaner.

“All I could do was sigh, because I know the school board doesn’t have the money to put the roof back on, as we are not receiving a subvention from the Ministry of Education,” she explained.

Classes are now being held at the Springfield Community Centre, but Crossman says restoring the school building is the top priority.

She is appealing for help.

School board member Linworth Brown stressed the institution’s importance, noting, “We want the school up and running; it is vital to the community, so whatever help we can get, we welcome.”

The board estimates that repairs, including concrete decking, will cost approximately $5 million.

Persons interested in assisting can call Crossman at 876-826-2645.
