Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness has announced a budgetary allocation of $10 million has been approved for each constituency across Jamaica as part of the National Cleanup Programme, following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

Holness says $2 million of the total would be for drain cleaning and vector control, $5 million for debushing and $3 million for debris and waste removal.

He says additional funds will be allocated for the 16 most affected constituencies across Westmoreland, Trelawny, Hanover, St James ad St Elizabeth.

An allocation of $150,000 has also been set aside for each councillor in the 63 constituencies.

Holness says between 100 and 200 people would be employed per constituency under the national cleanup effort, with the Social Development Commission set to organise and supervise these individuals.

Speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Holness noted that it is estimated that the hurricane left 4.8 million tonnes of debris across Jamaica. He said it was further estimated that it was equivalent to about 480, 000 standard truck loads.
