A St Catherine taxi operator has been charged after police allegedly caught him stealing cable wires from a manhole belonging to a telecoms firm in Moneague, St Ann, last Friday.

The accused, Omar Johnson, of Old Harbour Road, Spanish Town, has been charged with simple larceny and malicious destruction of property.

According to the St Ann’s Bay Police, at about 1:45 a.m. on December 5, a team on mobile patrol in the Moneague policing area observed Johnson extracting cable wires and placing them in a green Toyota Probox motor car.

Police reported that upon seeing the officers, Johnson allegedly sped off.

The team pursued the vehicle, intercepted it a short distance away, and recovered the stolen wires. The Probox was subsequently seized, and Johnson taken into custody.

He was later charged after the complainant provided a statement and identified the recovered cables.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in the St Ann Parish Court on February 3, 2026.
