Immigration Corner | Do Canadian citizens need a visa to visit the UK?
New rules take effect in 2026
Dear Miss Powell,
I read your articles in The Gleaner online all the time. My question is a little different from most, but I hope you can help me. I was born in Jamaica but I’m now a Canadian citizen. I plan to travel to the UK to visit my sister and someone said I will need a visa. Do Canadian citizens need a visa to go to the UK?
I look forward to your answer.
CC
Dear CC
Thank you for being a regular reader of the Jamaica Gleaner. As travel rules change across the globe, many Jamaicans abroad are understandably confused about what is required when visiting family or planning a holiday.
The United Kingdom is introducing an important change that will affect all visa-exempt travellers, including Canadian citizens, beginning in February 2026. The good news is that you will not need a traditional visa for a short visit. However, you will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding your flight.
ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORISATION
The ETA is not a visa. It is a security and immigration pre-screening linked to your passport, designed to streamline border checks and enhance security.
Canadians continue to enjoy visa-free entry for visits up to six months, once they have a valid ETA. The application is completed entirely online, or via the official UK ETA app. If your visit involves work, long-term study, or settlement in the United Kingdom, you will still need the appropriate visa.
The UK will adopt a strict “no permission, no travel” policy. That simply means that even with a Canadian passport, you may be prevented from boarding if the ETA is not approved in advance.
HOW TO APPLY
Applying for an ETA is simple. You will need your biometric Canadian passport, a digital photo, and a debit or credit card to pay the £16 fee. Most applications are approved within minutes. The ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires and allows multiple trips. Apply early to ensure a smooth trip.
