The artistic side of Suzette Granville emerged from necessity: a need to support her son financially. It has since become a venture that continues to yield valuable returns.

“I am a teacher, but I do jewellery, which started out of me wanted to be a better parent in providing my son with lunch money. I remember buying a dozen hook and a dozen stick down Town and I made 12 pairs of earrings, they went in zero time and person requested that I do necklaces for earrings,” Granville said.

A native of St Catherine, Granville teaches at Vauxhall High School. She says weaving craft items has been deeply fulfilling.

A grant from the Social Development Commission, coupled with training in how to structure a business plan, has helped her interest in the enterprise grow.

The Gleaner spotted her at the recently held Green Acres Farmers’ Market and exposition in St Catherine.

On display was a striking array of bracelets, necklaces, bangles, earrings and other pieces.

Granville explained that each time she exhibits her work; customers ask for variety. She now plans to branch into key rings and other items.

“My intention is to do more advertising, as my clientèle is expanding, this method will help to broaden the offerings,” Granville said.

A resident of Linstead, she describes her line as flexible, catering to children’s jewellery — for boys and girls — as well as adults.

She sources materials such as beads, wood, leather, plastic and other supplies locally.

A St Jago alumna, Granville says the practice helps her to think creatively while doing something she loves.
