Several wholesalers and retail outlets across the Corporate Area are experiencing chicken supply issues.

Checks conducted by The Gleaner on Tuesday and today revealed that a number of businesses, some usually considered reliable sources for poultry, were out of stock, while others reported having very limited supplies.

The shortage has sparked concern among consumers, particularly as chicken remains one of the most affordable protein options for many Jamaican households.

A highly placed source within the Ministry of Agriculture told The Gleaner that the Ministry is aware of the issue.

“Yes, we have picked it up,” the source said, noting that steps are already being taken to address the supply gap.

According to the Ministry source, the shortage is expected to be short-term, with improvements anticipated as early as next week.

While the factors contributing to the disruption were not stated, assurances were given that measures are under way to stabilise supply.

In the meantime, some retailers have advised customers to expect intermittent availability, while others say they are rationing remaining stock as they await new deliveries.
