Man accused of attempted rape dies after reported mob attack in St Catherine

A man who allegedly attempted to rape a woman in the Bermaddy community of St Catherine has died after being attacked by persons in the area.

His identity has not been released.

Police reports are that about 8 p.m. on Friday, the man allegedly assaulted a woman in the community and attempted to rape her.

The woman reportedly managed to escape and raised an alarm, shouting “Rape,” prompting community members to respond.

The man fled the area before the police arrived.

The incident was reported to the police, and a team visited the community, but the suspect was not located at that time.

It's reported that about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the man was again seen in the community and was reportedly descended upon by several persons.

He was allegedly chopped and hit with objects.

He was later assisted to the Linstead Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Linstead Criminal Investigation Branch has launched a probe into the matter.
