Sangster International Airport (SIA) has been upgraded to Level 3 of the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme, one of the industry’s more exacting benchmarks for carbon management.

At Level 3, airports are assessed not only on their own emissions, but on their ability to enlist airlines, ground handlers and other on-site partners in a co-ordinated approach to carbon reduction — shifting responsibility from a single operator to a shared, measurable effort across the wider airport ecosystem.

MBJ described the milestone as both a recognition of progress and a prompt for further action as sustainability becomes central to future operations.

Shane Munroe, the company’s chief executive, said the approach places SIA among a relatively small group of airports seeking to drive climate action across entire operational networks.

“This accreditation affirms what our team has worked tirelessly to build — a culture of environmental responsibility that extends into everything that we do. For us, sustainability is a core value that is embedded in how we plan, operate, and partner with every stakeholder at Sangster International Airport. We are proud of what has been achieved, and even more energised about what lies ahead as we continue raising the bar for airport environmental management in the Caribbean and the wider region.”

The upgrade was acknowledged by ACI’s Latin America and Caribbean arm, which congratulated MBJ on reaching Level 3. Francisco M. Medela Alonso, its industry affairs director, said the designation reflects a concerted effort to engage stakeholders in reducing emissions.

Administered by Environmental Minds, the ACA Level 3 certification adds to an existing environmental portfolio.

The SIA also holds ISO 14001 certification, the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems, which further emphasises MBJ’s systematic, standards-driven approach to minimising its environmental footprint across all aspects of airport operations.
