JMMB debit card customers to pay fee on international purchases

Visa debit card customers of JMMB Bank who make international purchases will have to go deeper into their pockets as the financial institution has moved to impose a fee on these transactions.

Starting Monday, October 19, cardholders who make purchases, whether online or in person, will be subjected to an International Card Transaction Conversion Fee of 2.3% (2.00% plus GCT).

Subscriptions, streaming, software, gaming, and other digital services provided by international merchants were cited by JMMB as examples of transactions that would be subjected to the fee.

The company explained that the fee will apply based on the nature of the transaction and/or the location of the merchant processing the payment.

“The fee may apply even when a transaction is displayed or completed in Jamaican dollars,” JMMB said in an advisory on Friday.

“If you use your JMMB Bank Visa Debit Card to make a purchase from an international online retailer, the International Card Transaction Conversion Fee of 2.3% (2.00% plus GCT) will apply, even if you choose to pay in Jamaican dollars at checkout,” it stated.
