MBJ Airports Limited, the operator of Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, says it is deeply saddened by the death of a construction worker at a worksite at the airport today.
MBJ says contracted steel erection works were under way by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (Jamaica) Limited on the apron near Gate 15 when the man was fatally injured.
The deceased has been identified as 58-year-old Everton Campbell, of a Grants Pen address in St Andrew.
The Gleaner was informed that parts of a crane he was operating reportedly fell on him, killing him on the spot.
It was indicated that today is Campbell’s birthday.
MBJ says work at the site has been suspended amid the incident.
It notes that the matter is being investigated by the police and that it is cooperating fully with the authorities.
“We are heartbroken by this loss and extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. Our thoughts are also with his co-workers and members of our airport community who were with him at the time. MBJ will arrange counselling and support.”
