Immigration | Applying for a digital record of exemption to enter the UK

Dear Mr. Bassie,
I need to apply for a digital record of exemption from the United Kingdom immigration control. Any advice would be helpful.
J. T.
Dear J. T.,
Persons may apply for a digital record of their exemption from immigration control if they do not normally need a visa to work in the United Kingdom (UK).
It is important to note that digital records of exemption have replaced exempt vignette stickers in passports, and they are not visas. Persons arriving there do not have to apply, but it can help them to avoid delays when entering the UK. Persons may only apply if they are exempt from immigration control. If the individuals travelling already have a valid exempt vignette sticker in their passport, they can continue to use it for as long as they remain exempt from immigration control.
Eligibility
Those persons who are eligible can apply if they are
• a diplomat or working for a diplomatic mission in the UK, and they were outside the UK when offered the post.
• an overseas government minister on official business.
• a member of Commonwealth or Overseas Territories armed forces posted in the UK or training in the UK.
• a head of state or working for a head of state (for example, on a state visit).
• exempt from immigration control for any other reason.
Please note that some family members may also be able to get a digital record of exemption.
Apply online
Persons should be aware that it does not cost to apply and that the earliest they may apply is three months prior to entering the UK. Applicants will need to fill in the online form.
Applicants may need to book an appointment at a visa application centre to provide their biometric information (fingerprints and photograph). They will usually get their passport back on the same day and should get a decision within three weeks.
Documents needed
Applicants will need to provide a current passport or other travel identification and a passport photograph – they must make sure it meets the rules for digital photos. They will also need to provide evidence that they are going to the UK as part of their job. For example, a letter could be provided from a UK or foreign ministry.
The Digital Record of Exemption
The successful applicant will need to set up a United Kingdom Visa and Immigration (UKVI) account if they do not already have one. It is through this account that the successful applicant will be able to access their digital record of exemption. The notification email or letter will provide the relevant instructions.
Please note that the digital record of exemption is usually valid for as long as your visit to the UK, for example, to do the job or attend an event. It is also linked to the passport and will be checked automatically when persons travel to the UK.
Just for completeness, please note that persons will be able to view their digital record of exemption and get a share code if asked to prove their immigration status, for example, when they travel to the UK or rent a property. Please note that if the passport or personal details change, persons will be able to update them in their UKVI account.
I hope this helps.
