The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is to host a scaled-down annual conference, foregoing a large public session in favour of a private, delegates-only conference to be held in Montego Bay, St James.

The party said the decision was made in recognition that many Jamaicans, including members of the party, continue to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The delegates' conference, described as a business-like session where important issues will be discussed, will be held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Sunday, November 15.

The JLP has approximately 6,000 delegates.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, JLP Deputy Leader Desmond McKenzie announced that the delegates-only conference will be addressed by party leader and Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness, noting that his presentation will be streamed to the public.

The delegates' conference is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., with Holness expected to speak at 1:30 p.m.

McKenzie said the private session of the conference will include matters such as the election of the party's leader and deputies.

He noted that JC Hutchinson will not be seeking re-election as Area Council 4 deputy leader and that Member of Parliament for St James Central Heroy Clarke has been nominated by the area council.

That nomination is to be ratified during the business session of the conference, McKenzie said.

Meanwhile, JLP Chairman Robert Montague indicated that JLP Central Executive will meet on November 29 to elect leadership positions such as chairman, general secretary, and treasurer within the party.
