THE CARIBBEAN Shipping Association (CSA) and APEC – Antwerp/Flanders Port Training Center signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday, March 19, formalising a partnership to increase training and professional development for Caribbean maritime professionals.

The agreement, signed by CSA President William Brown and APEC Managing director Kristof Waterschoot, establishes a framework for knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and collaboration between the two organisations. The partnership will broaden access to specialised training programmes for shipping and port professionals across the Caribbean, strengthening the industry’s competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global market.

The agreement follows APEC’s joint venture with Havenbeheer Suriname to establish a port training centre for operational trainings in Paramaribo, which allows it to offer training within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Under the MoU, the CSA will provide institutional support for APEC’s activities in CARICOM and facilitate port facility visits for knowledge exchange. APEC, which operates under the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, will offer training programmes, scholarships, and preferential rates for CSA members participating in its courses. Additionally, APEC will support CSA’s engagement with European maritime stakeholders, to foster greater business relationships and educational exchange opportunities.

The CSA has been a leading advocate for maritime education and training, organising conferences and capacity-building programmes to equip industry professionals with the skills needed to navigate emerging trends. This partnership with APEC aligns with the association’s commitment to professional development, sustainability, and technological advancement in the Caribbean shipping sector.

This collaboration comes at a critical time for the region, as Caribbean ports and shipping companies adapt to new regulatory frameworks, digitalisation, and environmental sustainability measures. By leveraging APEC’s expertise and global network, CSA members will gain access to high-quality, internationally recognised training opportunities, ensuring the industry remains resilient and future ready.

The MoU will remain in effect for five years, with both organisations expected to hold regular discussions to assess training needs and develop tailored educational programmes.
