Regional logistics and shipping firm LJ Williams has stepped forward with a significant contribution of J$2 million to the Shipping Association of Jamaica’s (SAJ) Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund, reinforcing its commitment to regional recovery and community support in the wake of natural disasters.
Based in Trinidad and Tobago, LJ Williams is in its 100th year, signing its first Ships Agency Agreement in 1953. It is a well-established name in the Caribbean’s maritime and logistics sector, providing shipping, agency, and port-related services across multiple territories. The company has long played a pivotal role in facilitating regional trade and connectivity, making its support for hurricane relief a natural extension of its corporate responsibility ethos.
Hurricane Melissa caused widespread disruption across parts of Jamaica, impacting infrastructure, livelihoods, and essential services. The relief fund, administered by the SAJ was established to provide timely assistance to affected communities and to support rebuilding efforts where they are most needed.
LJ Williams’ donation underscores the importance of private-sector involvement in disaster response, particularly within an interconnected region where collaboration is critical to recovery. By contributing to the fund, the company is helping to ensure that resources can be mobilised quickly and effectively for relief and rehabilitation initiatives.
President of the Shipping Association of Jamaica, Corah Ann Sylvester-Robertson, in expressing gratitude to LJ Williams for their generous contribution said: “Paul J. Williams and the LJ Williams team have been long-standing friends of Jamaica, with a deep appreciation for our people, culture, and communities. It is therefore no surprise that the company has stepped forward to support the country at a time when such assistance is most needed.”
The SAJ has welcomed the contribution, noting that support from regional partners such as LJ Williams strengthens the collective ability to respond to crises and demonstrates the power of cooperation within the maritime and logistics industry.
As hurricane seasons grow increasingly unpredictable, initiatives like the Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund continue to rely on the generosity and leadership of corporate citizens. LJ Williams’ donation stands as a meaningful example of how businesses can make a tangible difference beyond commercial operations, contributing to resilience and recovery across the Caribbean.
