Thomas-Dodd delighted with medal and record
BIRMINGHAM, England:
Daniel Thomas-Dodd won Jamaica’s first medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at the Arena Birmingham after she captured silver in the women’s shot put final on Friday.
The 25 year-old Thomas-Dodd captured her first individual senior medal when she threw a national indoor record best 19.22m.
The event was won by Hungary’s Anita Marton with a mark of 19.62m, while third went to China’s Lijiao Gong, who threw 19.08 metres.
Thomas-Dodd was very delighted with her performance.
"It is good feeling and it is definitely a confidence booster for me,” said Thomas-Dodd.
"I had it in the back of my mind that I am going to come out and do really well because I really wanted to get another indoor PR (personal best), which I did and to get a medal on top of it was a bonus,” Thomas-Dodd.
Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson finished a disappointed fourth in the final of the women’s 60m.
Thompson, who won bronze at the last championships in 2016 in Portland, Oregon, finished the race in 7.08 seconds. Her teammate Remona Burchell was eight in 7.50 seconds.
The event was won by the Ivory Coast’s Murielle Ahoure in 6.97 seconds, while her teammate Marie-Josee Talou was second in a personal best time of 7.05 seconds. The bronze medal went to Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland in 7.05 seconds.
Despite her fourth place finished, Thompson was pleased with her efforts.
"I have to give God thanks because I finished the race healthy. I came here with a 7.12 season’s best and I came out with 7.08 and so I can’t complained about that,” Thompson said.
