Trainer Gary Subratie has dedicated his first Jamaica Derby victory at Caymanas Park yesterday to his late father, Errol Subratie.

CALCULUS, with Shane Ellis aboard, rallied in the home stretch to win the Jamaica Derby, the $7.5 million event, by neck, from BILLY WHIZZ (ridden by Dick Cardenas). FURTHER AND BEYOND (Dane Nelson) was third.

“I am elated and very happy because this one is for my father,” Subratie said. “It was just a good team effort from the grooms because everybody in the stable was just jumping around coming into this race, as they were very confident coming in.”

Divine gratitude

Subratie, who has been training CALCULUS for the past two months after he was brought over to him by owner Chevan Maharaj, from the stables of Anthony Nunes, also had divine gratitude for the win.

“Everything just fell into place for us because this was a God thing, and for me to get this horse at this point in the season, I knew this had to happen for me,” he said.

Subratie also won the Jamaica St Leger with CALCULUS last month.

Ellis, who, winning the sixth Jamaica Derby of his career, said this victory will give him more confidence for the rest of the season.

“I am feeling very proud of myself because it was a very good ride,” he said. “This is a very good horse and he is going places in the future. For the remainder of the season, I will be very confident and hoping to get some more good rides and hopefully win some more races.”
