Jeremy Nelson, playing in an unfamiliar centre-forward role, provided a goal and an assist as Molynes United defeated Humble Lion 2-1 to end the first round of the Jamaica Premier League with two consecutive wins.

Filling in for his brother and the team’s leading scorer, Nicholas Nelson, who is away with the national team on international duties, the older Nelson said he knew he had to step up and was pleased he was able to do so.

“My little brother is off with the senior team but coach asked me to step up today and I did so. It doesn’t matter to me (which position I play). The coach put me out there to play this position and I am the senior leader and my side needed the three points to step up in the table, so I had to step up to the plate,” Nelson commented

“I feel very good to know that I could step up for him (Nicholas) in the goalscoring department and I know that he is going to feel very good. We are trying to move up to the top six and it was very important to get this win today,” he added.

Humble Lion only had themselves to blame for the defeat as they squandered a host of chances in the first-half, with Andre Clennon and Vishinul Harris missing most of the chances. Kareem Bryan then threatened in the 14th minute but Molynes survived the scare and countered through Reshawn Livingston who ran from inside his half before setting up Jeremy Nelson to score from 12 yards.

Humble Lion continued to be positive and had some great opportunities but neither Harris nor Clennon could convert any of the chances.

Molynes added a second goal 15 minutes into the second-half when goalkeeper Keneil Petrie blundered with a poor kickout and Nelson gained possession and set up Tyrick Sutherland to fire home at the edge of the area.

Humble Lion pulled a goal back when Suejay Graham scored with a deflected shot from 30 yards. However, despite keeping up the pressure on their opponent, Molynes held on to take the win.

“My attacking third was poor today, very poor,” said Humble Lion coach Andrew Price. “We should have been leading by about six goals in the first-half and I am not exaggerating. Numerous chances fell to our attacking unit in the six yards box and we failed to convert the ball, which is inexcusable.”

Molynes moved up to ninth in the table with 10 points while Humble Lion slipped to 11th in the standings on nine points.
