#Carifta2022 | Jamaica dominate 400 hurdles, USVI grab first gold

Jamaica dominated the Carifta Games 400-metre hurdles, putting together two one-two finishes, another gold and a silver and bronze as action coninues inside the National Stadium.

Jamaica's Roshawn Clarke dismantled the field to win gold in the boys' Under-20 400, clocking 50.68 seconds, well ahead of Shamiar Bain of The Bahamas, 52.83. Third went to Antigua and Barbuda's Craig Prendergast in 55.08.

Clarke's teammate Rayon Campbell pulled up on the backstretch and could not complete the race.

In the boys' Under-17 final, Martin Princewell produced an impressive stretch run to land the gold medal for Jamaica in a time of 53 seconds. His teammate Jordan Mowatt was second in 54.40, while bronze went to Jermahd Huggings of St Kitts and Nevis in 55.57.

On the girls side, Safhia Hinds led home a Jamaica one-two among Under-20 girls. Hinds won the event in 58.96 seconds, ahead of her teammate Shackelia Green, 59.77.

Natasha Fox of Trinidad and Tobago, who represented Edwin Allen at this year's ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls and Boys' Athletics Championships was third in one minute 02.35 seconds.

However, the Jamaicans had to settle for silver and bronze in the girls Under-17 final.

Jody-Ann Daley took the silver in a time of 1:02.22, while Deandra Harris won the bronze in 1:02.26.

The event was won in record-breaking fashion by the US Virgin Island's Michelle Smith, 58.61.
