OregonGoldRush | Holloway claims gold in Parchment’s absence
Disaster struck for Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon earlier this evening.
The Hayward Field venue was the source of high drama after Parchment, warming up to compete in the final of the 110-metre hurdles, clipped a hurdle and hurt his hamstring.
Parchment was out, but the drama wasn’t done yet, as world leader in the event, the United States’ Devon Allen, was adjudged to have false started. Allen’s reaction time was 0.099 of a second after the gun. The rules say an athlete is not able to react within 0.1 of a second without having anticipated the gun.
In the wake of the calamity around him, the United States favourite, Grant Holloway clocked 13.03 seconds to run away with the gold medal.
Second in the event was Holloway’s teammate, Trey Cunningham, 13.08, while Spain’s Asier Martínez was third.
