Jonathan Grant, Norman Manley draw 1-1
Jonathan Grant High and Norman Manley High battled to a 1-1 draw in their ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup football match at Jonathan Grant earlier this evening.
Chevaughn Rennie provided Norman Manley with a seventh-minute lead, with Victor Steele equalising for hosts Jonathan Grant in the 41st.
The match completed the preliminary round fixtures for both institutions, with Jonathan Grant ending on 24 points and Norman Manley on 17.
The point earned places Norman Manley in good stead to qualify for the second round of the competition as one of four best third-placed teams.
Jonathan Grant had already qualified for the second stage of the tournament as one of two automatic qualifiers from Group D with St Andrew Technical High School being the other.
Jonathan Grant controlled the action for most of the match, camping out in Norman Manley’s section of the pitch, although they failed to translate that territorial advantage into goal-scoring opportunities.
Norman Manley silenced the partisan crowd early when Rennie fired home from the fringes of the 18-yard box over the crowded area and goalkeeper Ammiel Hibbert.
Steele, with the halftime whistle approaching, fired a grounder through a host of players into the net, after Norman Manley’s defence had offered several opportunities for Jonathan Grant’s players to shoot at goalkeeper Shawn Malcolm.
