I’ve Got Magic stages St Catherine Cup coup
UNITED STATES-bred I’VE GOT MAGIC yesterday displayed his vast improvement since fitted with a tongue tie in December’s Mouttet Mile, dismissing sprinters at six furlongs in the St Catherine Cup.
Surprisingly early, tackling GOD OF LOVE and MADELYN’S SUNSHINE from five furlongs out, I’VE GOT MAGIC took over before the half-mile pole came up and was never headed thereafter, racing clear into the lane under Tevin Foster.
GOD OF LOVE chased but was never getting on terms, even worse for DUKE, who improved into second with a ground-saving rail run, which turned out to be in vain as I’VE GOT MAGIC ran away in the stretch run for a three-length win, closing a quick double for Philip Feanny and owner Lakeland Farms.
GOD OF LOVE staged a rally in the straight to get within a neck of DUKE, both outclassed by the American, who won in 1:12.3 as the 4-5 favourite.
Feanny won the previous event with an even bigger chalk, 1-9 favourite POWER, who beat SUNSET SILHOUTTE by three lengths at a mile. POWER virtually made all, toying with SHE’S MY FRIEND, who tried pressing the favourite for stablemate SUNSET SILHOUTTE.
POWER was well clear when SUNSET SILHOUTTE made her bid three furlongs out, ridden to chase the American into the straight. However, POWER stayed on strongly with Reyan Lewis to repel the local-bred filly.
Foster rode three winners on the nine-race card, landing a pair for Anthony Nunes – BLOOD SONG and CHANDRA’S LAW – before booting home I’VE GOT MAGIC.
Racing continues this afternoon with another nine-race programme set to run off at noon.
