Portmore United secure Alex Marshall signature
FORMER ST George’s College standout Alex Marshall has inked a two-and-a-half-year deal with seven-time Jamaica Premier League winners, Portmore United.
The 24-year-old Marshall, who recently returned to the island following a brief stint in the Canadian Premier League with the Patrice Gheisar-coached Halifax Wanderers, has the experience of playing in the local premier league, previously donning the colours of Cavalier SC. From 2016-2020, the attacker had scored 21 goals from 66 appearances.
Following the signing, Marshall lauded the professionalism displayed by Portmore United and cited his commitment to the task at hand.
ENCOURAGING CHANGES
“I’m very elated at the opportunity to again ply my trade in the JPL. Since I last played in the league, there have been encouraging changes to the competition. It is now being accessible to many countries around the world, including Canada. I’m happy to join the Portmore United set-up and have always admired the club for its professionalism and competitiveness in domestic and international competitions. I will give my usual 100 per cent to the team and use this platform to open new doors overseas in fulfilment of my ambitions,” said Marshall.
Portmore United, ahead of their 3:15 p.m. fixture today against Humble Lion, are currently seventh in the Jamaica Premier League table.
The move could provide well-needed impetus up front as they’ve only scored eight goals in the 10 games they’ve played.
Head coach of the unit Phillip Williams believes the move could boost not only Portmore United, but also the newly acquired player.
“Alex Marshall is a very important acquisition for us as we continue the building of our team. Alex is a proven striker in domestic football and is technically comfortable on the ball. I’m positive he will add value to our set-up as much as we will assist him with his personal aspirations. We will continue to be patient and deliberate with our signings as we strive to get back to our customary high standard,” said Williams.
The skilful Marshall also brings international experience, as he earned 13 caps for the Reggae Boyz and has represented Jamaica at the under-17 and under-23 levels.
