Donaldson among the honourees at Bell/Ziadie Memorial
Former Reggae Girlz coach Lorne Donaldson, one of the four honourees at today’s 38th renewal of the annual Bell/Zaidie Memorial football match at St George’s College, is expected to be at the venue to collect his award. Kick-off time is 2 p.m.
Donaldson, a former Cavalier, Colorado Foxes, and national midfielder, took the Reggae Girlz to the knockout stage of a FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time at this year’s tournament hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
However, after becoming the most successful international coach in the country’s history, his contract was not renewed by the Jamaica Football Federation.
Donaldson will be honoured with the likes of Calvin ‘Webber’ Stewart, a former central defender at Kingston College, Cavalier, and Jamaica; Cornel ‘Granny’ Marshall, a former national and St George’s College forward, and father of former Reggae Boy defender Tyrone Marshall; and Othniel ‘Dolphy’ Gordon, curator at Kingston College for more than 50 years.
The four participating teams include Masters and Entertainers, St George’s Old Boys, Referees, and Christian Ambassadors.
The Masters and Entertainers team will include players such as Laa Lee, Luthan Fyan, Nomads, Eric Rademakers, George Davis, Lincoln Taffe, and Fabian Watkins.
St George’s will have the wily Ali Rose, Mitchell Waul, Nick Zaidie and Calvin Hunter.
The referees team will include Oshane Nation, Keeble Williams, Carvel Banton, Stephan Dewar, and Karl Tyrell while the Christian Ambassadors will field players such as Phillip Riley, Zidane Clarke, James Ferguson, and Lloyd Richardson
The games will be played in a round-robin format, with the first match between St George’s and Christian Ambassadors scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m., while the final game between Masters & Entertainers and St George’s is set for 5.20 p.m.
