Vere too good for lowly Lime Hall
Captain Javier Brown led from the front with a brace as Vere United defeated Lime Hall 4-1 in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) yesterday.
The win pushed the Clarendon-based club up to seventh in the table, and assistant coach Jermaine Douglas said, after disappointing back-to-back defeats, they were determined to turn things around.
“We had two disappointing results but we know what this team can do. The guys came together, sorted out some of the issues, and put in a good performance,” he said.
Vere took the lead early. Seventeen minutes into the contest, Jadon Anderson was fouled in the area and Brown converted the penalty to put his team up 1-0.
However, Lime Hall levelled the match two minutes later when Dario Stewart scored with a well-struck effort from outside the area.
Douglas thought they failed to close down the Lime Hall attackers on that particular play.
“It was disappointing to concede off a set play. We weren’t urgent enough in closing down the ball, but we rebounded, showed character, and got the win in the end,” he said.
Vere reclaimed the lead three minutes after the break when Beckford showed his quality firing home a free kick.
The Linval Dixon-coached team then put further distance between themselves and their opponents when Alrick Maitland ran through on Beckford’s defence-splitting pass and slotted home his team’s third.
Suejay Graham came close to adding a fourth moments later, but his header hit the bar before going out of play.
However, they did get a fourth in the 75th minute when Brown beat Jaheim Williams with a low drive from 20 yards.
The result means Vere rejoined sixth-place Cavalier and Humble Lion on eight points in the standings.
It is now six defeats from six matches for Lime Hall, and coach Alfred Barnett said they are finding motivation hard to come by.
“I would say it (lead) more than slipped away. It galloped away. Mentally, when the team gave up that second goal, their heads dropped, they forgot how well they played in the first half and they just could not get back in the game.
“It just didn’t happen today. We have to go back to the drawing board and see how best we can get a positive result in the next game,” he commented.
