THE 2024 REGGAE Marathon, along with the Half-Marathon, 10K & 5K, brings the tourist town of Negril alive today.

With its infectious blend of fitness and festivity, the iconic event has become a must-attend for runners and this year accounts for athletes from over 25 countries arriving in the island.

Against the backdrop of Negril’s famous Seven Mile Beach, participants will once again experience the unparalleled mix of sport, music, and camaraderie that has made the Reggae Marathon legendary.

The excitement is always fuelled by the stories of participants.

Among those participants, this year, is Jamila Souffrant, a Jamerican and Reggae Marathon brand ambassador, who will be running her first half-marathon. This milestone coincides with the first anniversary of her debut book, Your Journey to Financial Freedom.

“Not only is this my first half-marathon, but it also serves as a celebration of my book’s anniversary. It feels amazing to return to my island home, where I was born – it feels like a true homecoming and full-circle moment,” Souffrant said.

Joining her on the start line is Katharina Raugust, a standout performer in the Stuttgart, Germany Marathon. Invited by the Jamaica Tourist Board’s Europe office, Raugust brings global flair to the event, underscoring its international reputation as a premier race.

The Reggae Marathon’s global acclaim continues to grow, bolstered this year by being named one of the top half-marathons in the world by Runner’s World magazine. Celebrated for its scenic, flat course and immersive Jamaican vibe, the event is a bucket-list experience for elite runners and casual participants alike. Live reggae music at every mile keeps spirits high, while the cool Caribbean breeze and support of the local community make every step memorable.

Adding to the excitement this year is the introduction of a brand-new 5K race, a first in the event’s 24-year history. Designed to be accessible for beginners and those new to road racing, the 5K offers a welcoming entry point into the world of running. Race director Alfred ‘Frano’ Francis explained the decision, saying, “The 5K is perfect for anyone looking to set an achievable fitness goal without feeling overwhelmed. It’s all about encouraging people to move and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.”

Of course, the Reggae Marathon is about much more than the race itself. The beloved Pasta Party returns with the support of JamWest’s new entertainment beach complex, offering runners and their supporters the chance to carb-load and soak up the pre-race excitement under the stars. On race day, the celebrations continue with the Victory Beach Party at Long Bay Beach Park, featuring live performances by Jamere Morgan.

Known for his unique fusion of reggae, R&B, and hip hop, Morgan will provide the perfect soundtrack for participants and spectators alike as they celebrate their achievements.

The Reggae Marathon’s commitment to community also shines brightly. Recently, the event honoured excellence by awarding laptops to the top schools in the 2023 10K High School Championships. For 2024, high school teams will compete for the High School Championship in the 10K, while hotel teams will vie for the Barclay Ewart and Carolyn Wright Trophies in the 10K and 5K respectively.

Whether lacing up for your first 5K, chasing a personal best in the half-marathon, or simply cheering from the sidelines, the Reggae Marathon promises an unforgettable weekend of fitness, music, and Jamaican pride.
