WPL: Dottin’s all-round effort lifts Giants

Deandra Dottin starred as the Gujarat Giants Women romped to a comfortable six-wicket victory over UP Warriorz Women in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) yesterday.
Dottin blasted an unbeaten 33 from 18 balls with three fours and two sixes to help the Giants easily overhaul the Warriorz total of 143 for nine, as they finished on 144 for four off 18 overs.
She joined Harleen Deol at the crease with the Giants in a spot of bother at 86 for four, and the two shared an unbroken partnership of 58 to ensure there would be no further slip-ups.
Deol ended not out on 34 from 30 balls, inclusive of four boundaries.
Captain Ashleigh Gardner led the Giants with 52 from 32 balls with five fours and three sixes.
Earlier, Priya Mishra took 3-25, Dottin snared 2-34 and Gardner 2-39, to limit the Warriorz to a below-par score after sending them in to bat first.
In a match played on Saturday, Hayley Matthews’ solid bowling performance could not prevent the Mumbai Indians Women from going down to the Delhi Capitals Women by two wickets in their opening match of the WPL.
Matthews took 2-32 with her off-spin, but Arundhati Reddy scrambled two runs off the last ball of the match to give the Capitals a thrilling victory and a winning start to their campaign.
Reddy’s efforts took the Capitals to 165 for eight off their 20 overs, in response to the Mumbai Indians’ total of 164.
The Capitals were led by Shafali Verma, who blasted 43 from 18 balls, while Niki Prasad made 35 from 33 balls, and Sarah Bryce 21 runs from 10 balls.
Earlier, Matthews was dismissed for a tw0-ball duck off the third ball of the innings.
Nat Sciver-Brunt lashed an unbeaten 80 from 59 balls and captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored 42 from 22 balls in an otherwise disappointing batting performance by the Mumbai Indians.
Annabel Sutherland took 3-34, while Shikha Pandey grabbed 2-14 for the Capitals.
