Centuries abound on Senior Cup opening weekend
MORE THAN half a dozen centuries were scored in the opening round of the 2025 Jamaica Cricket Association Stewarts Automotive-sponsored Michael Holding Senior Cup, which bowled off over the weekend at several venues across the island.
In the feature game at the Jamalco Sports Club, hosts Clarendon easily got by St Catherine Cricket Association by an innings and 66 runs.
Opener Randre Christie scored one of the first centuries of the competition as his 102 on Saturday’s opening day carried Clarendon to 216 for nine declared. Albert Gopie chipped in with 53, against four wickets for Junior Morrison.
In reply, St Catherine CA were dismissed for 100, with Perico Henry and Errol Thomas grabbing three wickets each.
Following on, St Catherine were reeling at 50 for nine late Sunday evening when their last pair exited the field and conceded the game, citing bad light. Krishmar Santokie did the brunt of the damage, bagging four wickets for 11 runs.
Over at Jacks River, St. Mary secured a 71-run win over G. C. Foster College, with the contest highlighted by a mammoth 235 not out from St Mary batsman Alwyn Williams.
Williams was supported by Ian Ennis, who made 59 not out in St Mary’s score of 401-3, replying to G..C. Foster’s 200 all out. Nkala Tracey made 77 not out against 6-55 from Tyrone Daley.
Batting a second time, G. C. Foster were then dismissed for 130, with Marlon Byfield grabbing three for 15.
Defending champions Kingston CC defeated Boys Town by an innings and four runs in their encounter at Sabina Park.
Kingston scored 284 for six declared, then dismissed Boys Town for 139, with Derval Green bagging four for 34.
Following on, Boys Town managed just a couple more runs in their second knock as they were dismissed for 141, with Patrick Harty grabbing five wickets for 55.
The Jamaica Defence Force also had an easy innings and 128-run win over St Thomas Cricket Association at Springfield.
Jordan Allen slammed 139 in the JDF’s first-innings score of 388 for six declared. St Thomas were then rocked for 141 before following on with 119. Tevin Gilzene bagged five for 19 for the JDF.
At Maxfield Park, Melbourne CC easily took care of Kingston and St Andrew Cricket Association by an innings and 78 runs.
KSACA were first dismissed for 107 with Warren Robinson grabbing four for 21 and Khari Campbell three for 42.
Renaldo Ingram then hit 113 not out and David Bird 97, to lead Melbourne to 304 for two declared. Campbell then returned to grab 5-22 to dismiss KSACA for 119 in their second innings.
At Nelson Oval, Kensington got the better of their neighbours, Lucas, by an innings and 57 runs.
Lucas were first routed for 107, after which Kensington replied with 315 all out, with Leroy Lugg leading the way with 108.
Spinner Ryan Francis then took 4-38, while Alex Hinds had 3-23 to dismiss Lucas for 151 in their second turn at the crease.
In other games on the weekend, St Elizabeth got the better of Manchester while Westmorland handled business against St James.
