Class Two girls’ 100m hurdles will be hot
The girls’ sprint hurdles are expected to be very competitive across the various classes at next week’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships. However, the event that could attract the most attention is the Class Two 100 metres hurdles.
In what is expected to be a massive showdown, St Jago’s duo of Malayia Duncan and Adora Campbell will go head-to-head with Wolmer’s Girls’ pair of Tiana Marshall and Akeelah Bell in a mouthwatering clash.
All four athletes have been impressive all season, posting strong times, with Duncan leading the way. She clocked a personal best of 13.16 seconds to win at the Central Athletics Championships, with her teammate Campbell finishing second in 13.51.
At the Corporate Area Championships, Marshall, who remains unbeaten this season, clocked 13.34 for the win, holding off her teammate Bell, who finished second in 13.41.
Competing over the higher hurdles at the Carifta Trials, Marshall underlined her excellent form, clocking 13.18 to edge St Jago’s Bryanna Davidson, who finished second in 13.32, to win the Under-20 event and exact some form of revenge.
A year ago, Marshall was the overwhelming favourite to win the Class Two event at Champs but was denied by Davidson, who will compete in Class One this time around. However, it will be no easy task for Marshall this year, as both Duncan and Campbell will be determined to put another dent in her pride and ensure the title stays at Monk Street in Spanish Town.
Duncan showed at the Central Athletics Championships that she is in peak condition and could go even faster next week. Meanwhile, Marshall will be eager to maintain her unbeaten streak and make up for last year’s disappointment.
While Duncan and Marshall have clocked the two fastest times in the class this season, Bell and Campbell cannot be written off, as both have the potential to go all the way. This is an event where there is no room for error – one slight mistake could prove costly, paving the way for any number of outcomes in what promises to be a sizzling showdown.
